Overnight Oats

Some recipes come and go. Trends cycle in and out. But overnight oats? Overnight oats have been in my life for years, and they are not going anywhere. This is a classic for a reason, and I have adapted this recipe so many times over the years that I could probably make it in my sleep, which honestly feels appropriate for something you make the night before.
The beauty of overnight oats is almost embarrassing in its simplicity. You put things in a jar. You shake it. You put it in the fridge. You wake up in the morning, and breakfast is already done. That is it. No cooking, no standing over the stove, no scrambling at 7am trying to feed yourself before the day swallows you whole. Just open the fridge, grab your jar, and go.
I am starting with the classic strawberry version today because it is my favorite base and the one I keep coming back to no matter how many variations I try. But I want you to know right now that this recipe is just a starting point. The variations are truly endless; I could probably write a whole series just on overnight oat combinations, and honestly maybe I will. But for now let’s start here, get you comfortable with the base, and then I will give you a bunch of ideas to run with on your own.
Let’s Make It
This could not be simpler. Add everything to a jar or a bowl: your oats, milk, Greek yogurt, honey, vanilla, and strawberries. Put the lid on and shake it all together until everything is combined. Then put it in the fridge and walk away.

That is genuinely it. Let it sit overnight? or at least 4 to 6 hours, and the oats will absorb all that creamy goodness and transform into the most satisfying, thick, creamy breakfast you can imagine.
In the morning, grab your jar and eat it cold straight from the fridge or heat it up in the microwave for a minute or two if you prefer it warm. Both are delicious. Both are perfect. It is completely up to you and your morning mood.

Quick Oats vs Rolled Oats — Which Should You Use?
Both work beautifully, and it really comes down to personal texture preference.
Quick oats — softer and creamier result. Almost pudding-like. Great if you like a smooth creamy consistency.
Rolled oats — heartier and chewier result. More texture and substance. Great if you like something with a little more bite.
I have made it both ways and genuinely love both. Try each and see which one feels right for you!
Flavor Variations to Try
Once you have the base down, the world is your oyster. Here are some of my favorite combinations:
- Strawberry Banana — sliced strawberries and banana with a drizzle of honey. Classic and delicious.
- Blueberry Lemon — fresh blueberries and a little lemon zest stirred in. Bright and fresh and so good.
- Peanut Butter Banana — swap the Greek yogurt for a big spoonful of peanut butter and add sliced banana. Protein packed and incredibly filling.
- Apple Cinnamon — diced apple, a generous pinch of cinnamon, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Tastes like fall in a jar.
- Mango Coconut — diced mango and coconut milk instead of almond milk. Tropical and absolutely delicious.
- Chocolate Peanut Butter — add a tablespoon of cocoa powder and a spoonful of peanut butter. Tastes like dessert for breakfast and nobody needs to know.
- Peaches and Cream — sliced peaches and a little extra vanilla. Simple and so dreamy.
- Mixed Berry — whatever berries you have on hand all thrown in together. Never a bad idea.
- Pumpkin Spice — add a spoonful of pumpkin puree and pumpkin spice seasoning. Perfect for fall mornings.
Tips From Your Mom Bestie
Make a whole week at once. This is the real power move. On Sunday night line up five jars, fill them all, shake them all, and put them all in the fridge. Breakfast is handled for the entire week. Five minutes on Sunday saves you scrambling every single morning. That is the kind of prep that actually changes your routine.
Use any milk you love. Almond milk is my go-to, but oat milk, coconut milk, whole milk, and 2% all work beautifully. Use what you have and what works for your family.
Flavored Greek yogurt adds extra sweetness. If you use a vanilla- or strawberry-flavored Greek yogurt, you may not need as much honey. Taste it before you add sweetener and adjust from there.
Add toppings in the morning. If you want something crunchy on top, like granola, nuts, seeds, or coconut flakes, add those in the morning right before you eat so they stay crispy instead of getting soggy overnight.
Eat them cold or warm. Cold is the classic overnight oats experience, and it is so refreshing, especially in summer. But if you prefer a warm breakfast, just pop the jar in the microwave; remove the lid first! Put it in for about 60 to 90 seconds and stir. Warm creamy oats in the winter are an absolute hug in a bowl.
These keep in the fridge for up to 5 days. Make your batch on Sunday, and they are good all the way through Friday morning. Meal prep does not get easier than this.
Years of making overnight oats, and I still look forward to opening that jar every single morning. Simple, nourishing, endlessly customizable, and completely grab and go, this is exactly the kind of breakfast that makes a busy week feel manageable.
