The Baked Beans That Disappear at Every Single Party

You know what people love at every cookout? Baked beans. Whether it’s sitting next to the potato salad or the macaroni salad, baked beans are what make a barbecue feel complete.
When I met my husband, he used to make these all the time, and I fell in love with them immediately, so naturally, I had to make them my own. I’m sharing this one because good things don’t have to be hard or fancy. This recipe is about as simple as it gets. You can throw it together with stuff you probably already have in your pantry, and it’s not even close to “from scratch”, it’s those classic canned baked beans everybody can grab at the grocery store, just dressed up with a little bit of your own touch.
What You’ll Need

• 2 (28 oz) cans baked beans, your favorite brand
• ½ package bacon, chopped
• ½ large red onion, chopped
• 2 tablespoons ketchup
• 1 tablespoon mustard
Let’s Make Some Beans
I don’t have this one written down anywhere official, it’s always just been “throw it together” in my head. So here it is, finally in recipe form.
Cook your bacon and onion

In a pan, fry up your chopped bacon along with the chopped red onion. Sauté together until the bacon is cooked through and the onions have gone translucent. Leave all that bacon grease right there in the pan, that’s flavor, not something to drain off.
Add everything else

Once your bacon and onion are cooked together, stir in your two cans of baked beans, the ketchup, and the mustard. Let it warm through on the stove until everything’s heated and combined.
That’s it

That’s the whole recipe. It’s simple, but that little bit of bacon, onion, ketchup, and mustard adds just enough zing to make people ask what you did differently.
Tips & Tricks
• Feeling spicy? Sauté some chopped jalapeños in with the bacon and onion. It’s a great kick, but it’s not for every crowd, you never know who can’t handle spice, so read the room.
• Want it sweeter? Stir in ¼ cup of brown sugar along with the beans. It rounds everything out beautifully.
• This is one of those recipes anybody can make and everybody can adapt to their own taste. There’s no wrong way to make it yours.
Serving Suggestions
This dish goes with pretty much anything that comes off a grill. My personal favorite plate is macaroni salad, a big scoop of these baked beans, and a hot dog or burger. Simple, classic, and always a hit.
